While regular extra heavy flannel uses 10-count warp and 8-count weft yarns, this fabric uses 7-count weft yarns, which are unevenly woven, giving the fabric more volume. All of the yarns used are dyed using a method called rope dyeing, which does not completely penetrate to the core of the yarn, resulting in varying shades of indigo appearing as the color fades.

The fabric has a unique matte weave called Amundsen. It was named Amundsen because it was developed in Bishu (Aichi Prefecture) around the time explorer Amundsen successfully explored the Antarctic. The back is brushed, making it soft to the touch and trapping air for warmth.

When the pre-dyed indigo thread is passed through the loom, the machine becomes stained with indigo, so there are only a limited number of factories that can weave this type of indigo fabric. Furthermore, they use vintage power looms with low production efficiency, making it a precious fabric that can only weave 50 meters a day. By weaving slowly and carefully, a voluminous, soft, yet strong fabric can be produced.
